Audiecne Feedback - Done -

Audience feedback is important to any film as it allows you to recieve the intake of whom your film is amied at in order to generate and etablish the good and bad points of your film and how it can therefore be improved. We recieved feedback from our audiecne as we screened it to them in order to recieve thier verdict , we then gathered them together to brainstorm the negatives of our film and the precautions we could take to improve them. This feedback would benefit our production as it allows us to gather to negatives and how nto overcome them for current or future projects , furthermore , it allows us to highlight the good points and etablish what ones offered our audiecne the highest viewing pleasure.
Good comments from our audiecne -
·        One comment we recieved from our audience was about the cinematography that we used , the audiecne highlighted that they found the constant use of close ups effective as it allowed them to etablish how the characters were feeling in constrast to the other characters and therefore allowed a better portrayment of character portfolio. (Rebecca)
·        Another Comment we recieved from our audiecne was the use of sound within our film , they highlighted that the sound was effective as it created tension in a numerous amount of scenes in particular the kidnapping scene , where the charcetr gets taken , the sudden burst of sound created fear as it suprised the audiecne and therefore via use of the sound furthered emotion produced.(bianca)
·        Another postive comment highlighted by our audiecne was how our location was effective , they said how the location was conventional as all the locations in our scene were dark and realistic , whcih are reflective of the genre we are focusing on. (Darryl)
·        We allso recived a postivive comment on the use of editing as they highlighted hoow effective we used the editing , in particular the fade to back in the final scene which were a subistite for the character opening and closing her eye. (Kayliegh)
Bad comments from our audiecne -
·        Our audiecne highlishted our our use of on screen sound , by the use of the characters sream was uneffective due to its lasting effective , the member of the audiecne said how it took away the emotion of the scene as the scream took his attention away from the footage. (Johnny)
·        Another negative comment from our audiecne was the reprersentation of the characters , in particular the relationship between the characters julia and brad , the member of the audiecne said that we could of used a more dramatic scene or encouraging acting in order to etablish thier romantic relationship. (Teonya)
Overall , I believe I have followed the aims of the brief for the Two minute thriller as I and My group have used the following elements ; Cinematography , Iconography , Sound , Editing and Mise-en-scene in order nto create an effective and conventional film which will pleasure the target audiecne.

Soundtrack of thriller production - Done -

The purpose of a soundtrack within a film is to increase the viewing pleasure which can be used by introducing music or sound effects in order to create more of a range of emotions from the audiecne such as fear and excitement. We used Apples Logic pro as our sound software , we found that this was a good descison as it was effective atproducing and blending sounds for our film. The sounds we used mainly came under the catergory of eeire , which were mainly slow paced , slowly rising music which were conventional sounds as they created an effective use of tension within the film.

Examples of conventional soundtrack within my thriller -
  • Non - digectic - Our slowly rising music that occurs throught the whole production , althought it rises and slows down as well as becomes louder or quiter at points of the film. Another use of soundtrack is beginning the opening credits which slowly introduces the audiecne to the thriller.

The soundtrack software I used within my thriller was apples logic pro -

I decided to use this software within my thriller in as it was effective at inserting the sound within the timeline as I could add each sounded I wanted to match the scene therefore it would make the sound parrelel to the image.

For example -

The sound is important in this scene as it is a mix of digectic sound via the breathing of the character as well as the use of soundtrack that is non-digectic by the use of a soundtrack that is rising rapidly to show how the character is feeling , which is scared and worried due to his girlfriend going missing which is therefore enhanced by the introduction of the music.

Reflection :
Our soundtrack is effective as it is parralel to our film , for example , in our scene where our kidnapper has his vitcim tied up , the sound gets higher in terms of tempo and the scene fades to black , this shows how the tension has built to its highest point and something is about to happen , the scene then ends , however the audiecne are still on the edge of thier seat due to the use of the sound. Throughoout of film we have used sounds that are conventioanl to the genre thriller as it allows the audiecne to develop there reakltionship with the film as they are more invovled with the films. The most common sound effect used within our film is non-digectic which is predominatly soundtrack , soundtrack is an essestional sound effect in a thriller as it adds to the fear and excitement which are key emotions within a thriller film.

Preliminary task - Done -

Our preliminary task invovled producing a 1 minute sequence in which we had to plan , record and edit the sequecne in order to demonstrate our understanding of the recording and editing equipement. My group who consisted of tre and Jamie , decided to record a numerous amount of converstations between two characters in whcih myself and tre acted as. There were a nurmous amount of difficulties in filming our task , one of them were that our cameraman ( Jamie ) had no previous experice with a camera and therefore we endured a lengthy period whilst he was discovering the key prinicples of filming. Another diffuciltie we overcome when filming our prelimary task , was that we had to produce the recording and planning of it within a day , and therefore was rushed into it without having a direct idea of what uses of elements such as cinematography and sound we wanted to use.

one shot featured within our preliminary task

Reflection :
The preliminary task was overall effective as it allowed us as a group to understand the priniciples of filming and editing a film. I learnt how to use storyboards in order to support the development of a film as i understood how directors and film crew look back on them to insure all the features of the film are bieng included.Premilimary task was also important as we understood what shots were effective , for example , within our 1 mintue film we included an etablishing shot , in whcih our cameraman had to climb up stairs in order to look down on the characters , and therefore we learnt how to do shots similar to this.

Opening Scene Narration - Miss G - Done -

 Opening Scene

It is important to follow the codes and conventions of any film so that the audiecne can identfiy the genre and therefore prepare themsevles for what events will occur  , however , it is essentional that you follow the codes and conventions of a thriller as the codes and conventions make up and determine the overall viewing pleasure ; elements such as sound , camera angles and content are elements that are considered to be conventions , and can/must be used in thrillers in order to create fear and excitement for your audiecne to expiercne.

First use of elements :

Our first camera shot the audeicne expiercne is the use of a extreme close up , the extreme close up is used to show the characters eye , this confuses tha audiecne as it is the first shot , and uses a mysteroius , disequilliberum effect. The use of an extreme close up is conventional to a thriller as it effects the audiecne due to them not understanding the scene completely and therefore they have a split emotion between fear and excitement. The first use of sound within our film obessed will be the soundtrack , we are yet to create the soundtrack however it will consist of weary and slow building up beats this will be conventional as it will engage the audience and develop a intreset in the film from them , furthermore , they would be able to link the sound or music in the scene when something bad is about the occur or on the other hand be able to link the music in with how we are trying to represent the character , whether it be a negative sound for the angtangist or postive for the protangist. The first use of editing withing our film is a straight cut , we use this after our first shot , this is effective as we flood ideas into our audiences head in a short period of time in order for them to be interacted with the scene and make assumptions. Straight cuts are conventional and they can create fear via the use of a quick flash like transition.
Our opening scene allows the audience to establish that the film is a thriller due to the use of these elements which may further thier interest within the film.

Second use of elements :

The second camera shot used in obession was the shot of panning , panning is an effective shot as it allows us to view the location of the scene whilst still focusing on the character. Panning is a conventional camera as it can allow the audiecne to become more engaged in the scene and also have a further knowledge of the scene, panning is therefore a coventional camera to the genre of a thriller. Our second use of sound is also a soundtrack however the sound slowly changes into a more upbeat sound as the narrative starts to develop and this is shown by the sound and represents the mood of the scene via use of the sound. Soundtrack is used in thrillers to add to character representation and enchance the effectiveness of the scene. Our second use of editing consists of a point of view from the character troy , this is a effective shot as it allows the audiecne to view the scene through his eyes and feel an intake of his postion. The point of view shot is conventional to thrillers as it can help produce a character profile and develop more emotion for the character.

Third use of elements :

Our third camera shot used is a mid-shot , our character troy is shot in his secret location , a mid shot contains ther character from waist upwards , this shot is effective as it allows the audiecne to identify what the character is wearing and what the clothing represents , furthermore this shot is effective as it includes the facail emotions and body language and therefore shows the characters all round expression which is a factor when describing why the mid-shot is a conventional thriller camera shot. Our third use of sound is a startling sudden sound which represents the characters emotions when he discovers the syumbolic props, we think this is an effective and conventional use of sound as the audeicne can identify the current mood of the scene via the use of the sound. Our third use of editing is the use of a shot reverse shot , from the item to the characters face then back to the item , this is effective as it allows the audiecne to create an idea of the purpose of the relationship with the character and the item. Shot reverse shot is conventional to thrillers as they are usally assiocated with conversations between characters which are used in signifcent parts in films and therefore could deciate the rest of the narrative.

Planning The Sound - Done -

    Sound Planning

Sound is important in the film world as it is a micro element that can provide atmosphere and emotion within a scene , and can cause a desired audeicne response. I believe it is important to think about the sound especially in thriller films it can add to the tension created by the narrative or the scene and therefore provide the audiecne with a further understanding of what is going on , furthermore the sound can also help the audeicne predict what is going to happen.

Some of the conventional uses of sound in thrillers are :

  • Non-Digectic sound is used to enchance the tension in the scene and therefore create extra supsense , the most common examples of non-digectic sounds are soundtracks.
  • Parrell sound  reflects what is happening in the scene
  • Degectic sound is used to enchance the realistic pleasure of films , digectic sound includes dialogue nor other sounds where you can see where they are coming from.
  • Off-screen is a the sound where you can hear it but can not see where it is coming from , a prime example of this is footsteps off scene.
The sound I plan to use in my thriller consists of the following :

  1. Non-Diegectic sound will feature in my film when our main character Troy appears , this will be effective as it will develop the audiecnes character portofilio of him , and therefore he will be labelled as the angtansist due to the negative music being present. Non digectic is a conventional sound technique as it  can enhance and increase the viewing pleasure as the music could represent a theme or feeling in which in terms of a thriller would be fear and excitement.
  2. Off screen Sound will be used in my film where there is a point of view shot , the sound we hear is heavy breathing , we can not see where this sound is coming from and therefore is off screen. Off screen sound is an effective sound technque as it can scare the audeicne as they dont know when it is going to happen this is a reason why it is conventional to the thriller genre.
  3. Digectic sound will be used when our character throws the chain on the bench and you can hear the chain crashing to the bench , this is a effective use of sound as it allows the use of natural and realistic sound to take place.
  4. On-screen sound will be used used in my thriller when the female character , julia is screaming during her kidnapping ordeal. On screen sound is an effective choice as the audiecne can see where the sound is coming from , and therefore the scene is realistic as the image is reflectived in the scound. On screen sound is conventional to the genre thriller as it can express the emotion of the scene in terms of sound and therefore increase the tension or fear created by the scene.
  5. Parallel sound will be used in my film when the male character troy is physically overpowering the female character Julia during the alleyway scene , this is an effective sound technique as the scene becomes more realistic due to raw sounds only being used , which is therefore conventional as the audience can witness the violence and infer what's going to happen via the introduction of the parallel sound.
Planning the sound of my thriller was essetnional as it allowed me to eatablish the most common sound techniques I needed and therefore prepared me for whcih scenes I was going to use them in.

Planning the cinematograhy and Editing. ( Updated )

Cinematography Planning

The Element of Cinematography is essentional in films due to the effect , emotions and meanings it can create within a film. It is important to think about the way cinmeatograpghy is used within a film as it can portray the storyline , create a relayionship with the audeicne or even enchance the audiences viewing pleasure.Cinematographgy is used in thrillers to produce the emotions of thrills , fear and excitement.

Some of our conevntional thriller cinematograpghy elements we included were camera angles , we used camera angles such as point of view shot to create a relationship with the audiecne and character as the shot allows the audiecne to see what the character see's and therefore feel as they are in their shoes and feel what they feel. The movement in our film is effective and conventional as it is free-flowing , for example , the camera isnt in a fixed postion during a scene and therefore , this creates a realistic effect and makes the scene more believeable.

The cinematograpghy I plan to use in my thriller conists of the following :

1.Close-up will be used when the character is about to produce a set of emotions for example , about to cry or scream , i think this camera shot is effective as it allows the audiecne to become more intreative with the scene by feeling closer to the action , this is a conventional camera shot as the use of the shot can change the characters thoughts or emotions for example if the character is crying , the audiecne can sympathise with the character and therefore have a relationship with them.

2.Panning will be used to rotate around a scene , this is effective as it allows the audiecne to visualise the scene from diiferent and varied points of views , furthermore i think this is an effective chioce as the scene is kept free flowing and kept with raw emotion. Panning will be used in my film in the scene where our character julia is held captive by the character troy , the camera will pann/rotate around the scene to show where the character is , the use of panning is effective and conventional as it can develop a sense of dissulion and confusion.

3.Point of view shot is effective as it allows the audiecne to have an insight from the characters view as well as interact with the scene. Our point of view shot is used where our main character troy has held our other female character , the camera is postioned where our character would be to show what our character is feeling and what postion they are in , this is effective as it allows our audience to be invovled in the scene and create a relationship with the character.

4.etablishing shot will be used when we enter a new scene , i have chosen to use this as it is an effective method to introduce the audiecne to a new scene or location , an example of where we will be using this shot is where our main character is following our female character into a new area this is conventional as it will confuse the audiecne into making assumpotions about what is going to happen.

5.Extreme close up is similar to close up as it is postioned towards the characters top half , however extreme close up is usally used to show the characters face or facail expressions. Extreme close up will be used in the captive scene where our female character julia is bieng force fed by our male character troy , the camera will be zoomed in on the mouth to show the food going in and also it will show the characters emotion. This shot is conventional as it can create fear due to the intensity and gore it can create , furthermore we allow to witness the characters emotions reacting to events that occur in the scene.

6.High angle will be used when our characters are in conversation with each other , this is an effective way of shooting our scene as it allows the audiecne to see the whole scene take place whilst focussing on the characters. The characters that will feature in this scene are Brad and julie , this is also a clinical part in our film as the conversation is a key point. High angles are conventional to a thriller because it can highlight the important scenes and signifcent ones and show when theres is a signifcent moment.

7.Low angle will be used in the kidnapping scene , this is the only example of the low angle shot as it is used the show the signifecene. The kidnapping scene is lowlight and therefore we thought it was also effective to use a low angle shot to also illustrate the characters feeling of useless in the scene , which reflects the inferoir emotion. Low angle is conventional to thriller as it can create the emotions of fear and excitement.

                                               Editing Planning

Editing is important in films as it can allow the audience to become more invovled with the narrative as editing can create a free flowing fil via use of scene translation. I believe it is important to think about the editing, espeicsally in thriller films because the editing can enchance the fear created in the film and develop the emotions created , which in this istance are fear and excitement.

Some of the conventional uses of editing in thrillers are slow motion which slows the scene down is a unrealisrtic manor , slow paced editing which slows the translations of the film , fast paced editng which increases the speed of the tranmslations.

The editing I plan to use in my thriller consists of the following :

1.Slow paced editing will be used when our character troy is smelling his exgirlfriends scarf this is effective as it demonstrates troys emotions of love towards the character of julia , i have chosen to use this as it represents our character and gives us an intake of his personailty. Slow pace editing is conventional to thrillers as it can change the mood of a scene from love to hate.

2.Jump cut is a translation that creates a sense of suprise as it allows us to move from one scene from another , Jump cut is used in our scene to present our flashbacks , we jump from the sniffing of the scarf scene which translate into the memory of the scarf scene. Jump cut is conventional to thrillers as it can ecnhacne the feeling of excitement by creating a thrill effect.

3.Fast paced editing is used to keep a high pace scene when translating and further the tempo , we used this when the angtangist character is following the other two characters , this is effective as it creates tension and adds to the emotion gained by the audiecne from the film.

4.Straight Cut is a cut that is most effective when wanting to keep the pace of a scene while translation , it is used in our film to show where the character is going and where his location is , for example where we are filimg near the flats.

5.Wipe Cut - is a transition that swipes one scene into another , this will be used within our thriller film when the chatacer troy runs out of his hidden location which is our first scene. I have chosen to use this cut as it allows the scenes to gently translate without adapting the audiecnes focus . this cut is conventional to a thriller as it chagnes the scenes from location to location , or , character to character without chagning the mood of the scene or taking away tension , furthermore , it may create excitement for the audiecne as it can be used when the audiecne doesnt expeact it and therefore come as a suprise.

6.Reaction shot - is a shot in which the following shot reacts to the previous one , and therefore allows the scene to flow within a naturally and relaistic manor. This shot will be used within my thriller when our chracaters Julie and Brad meet up , brad hands julia the necklace , in which we cut to her to show how she reacts to the gesture , which also allows us to etsablish thier relationship. This is a shot conventional to thriller as it shows how the characters interact and allows the audiecne to dinstinguish how the scene will commense further on within the film.

7. Fade to black is a cut that dissovles the scene into darkness , this will be used within our thriller when our character julie wakes up from her kidnapping m this allows

Cinematography and editing styles are important within a film as they are the spine of the films as they create what the audience see and influence the pace of the film in terms of editing as editing can provide the scenes to speed up or slow down via the use of the transitions.

Opening Credits & Typography (Updated)

Opening credits are sitauted at the biginning of a movie ; credits include the production team , sound techinans , and the main actors in the film. Opening credits are used to bring the audiecne into the movie mindframe and prepare them for the movie ,by the use of sound , visual effects and typography which describes the type of font they use.

Thriller opening credits contain weary sounds that allow the audiecne to feel the emotion of curoisuty or fear , this allows them to become intrested in the film and make them continue watching it. The visual effects used in thrillers often contain blood or use of the weapons which show the content of the film  and can slowly introduce the opening scene via use of the credits. The typographgy usally includes the main actors names , this is used so the aiudicne can identify the most famous and signficent roiles in the play and can therefore see if thier favourite actors are in the film.

Se7en Opening Credits :

The visual effects , which describes everything you see , are effective in se7en as they contain elements of the film. We can infer that religon and obession are going to be a theme or aspect of the film as we see religous related words as well as newspaper articles cut out to show thier importance to the character. We can also infer that the character is un-ordinary as there as pictures of body parts as well as medical kits , which therefore makes the audiecne feel confused , and supicous of the upcoming narrative and how the pictures reflect it.

The sound used in the opening credits of the film se7en is used to create fear and set up the audiecne for the rest of the fiilm ; the sound does this by fading in and out by using 'screechy' sounds as well as weary noises, these sounds are conventionally to thrillers and they create the emotions of fear and excitement.
In terms of typogragphy the opening credits of se7en is effective as the font is conventuional to a thriller as it is un-edged , and fits into the background without standing out or blending in , Firthermore the use of typography to show the actors is effective as the most common actors feature first.

Our opening scene and credits :

Our opening credits will be conventional to a thriller as we will included all our directors and actor information within a bold , crackled font in red , this will be horror like and the credits will excerise the fear that will be shown in our film.Futhermore within our credits/opening scene , the shot is panning which also allows the audiecne to view the earlier uses of location and icongraphy.

Anaysling se7en has benefited me as i have discovered the key features what an effective opening credits must contain , and therefore have noted the elements that i need to include within mine, furthermore i have etablished what a opening credit must contain in order to achieve its genre. Se7en has also inpsired me as I have included varouis objects in the film within the opening credits , such as books, jewerlly and dolls, all objects that have a mysteroius and dark effect. I will also feature asoects of se7en as i will use a font style similar to thiers as it will be more coventional due to the sharp edges of the text.
