Sound ( Updated )

Sound

The use of sound is essentional in the filmworld , it adds effect to the scene and gets the audiecne more enovled and engaged in the films they are viewing. There are many types of sounds such as non-digectic , diegectic , on screen , off screen , parallel and contrapuntal. These are just a small number that are used to represent the meaning of the scene and enchance the understanding of the charracters feelings and emotions. Sound is used in thriller to add to the emotions created by the scenes , and can add edge to the film.

Digectic sound is any sound that is part of the scene within the film , sounds such as car engines , sceams and sounds of the characters shouting or screaming are forms of digectic sound. Non-diegectic on the other hand , is the sound that is not directly part of the film , sounds such as soundtracks and vioceovers aren't considered to be part of the film and therefore make it non-digectic.

On-screen sound is the term that describes the sound that you can see in the scene such as a playing radio or television in the scene this is effective as the scene becomes more realistic when this is used. Off-screen sound however , you can not see where the sound is coming from , this is effective in horrors and thrillers and the audiecne are curioius to as where the sound is coming from and therefore gets them more engaged in the scene.

Parallel sound is the term that describes bieng able listen to a sound that matches the image on the screen such as a background noise after a crash ,

Contrunpul sound on the other hand is the sound that doesnt reflect which is on the screen and is therefore opposite of the screen.

The scene starts with the use of digectic sound , we can hear the car screeching on the ground this is followed by the charracters vioce , the use of this car screech is an example of digectic sound , this is effective because the sound fits in and is part of the scene . This is then follwed  by the use of onscreen sound as we can see the characterof batman shooting a weapon follwed the the gunshot niose.

The sound also featured in the extract is on screen sound , this is due to the expoloson in which we can visualise and see , this is an effective sound technique as it adds to the entertainemnt , as we can etablish when the objects have exploded , on screen sound is therefore conventional to the genre of action adventure.
Another effective use of sound within the extract is when there is complete silence within the scene after the vechile craches , this is effective as it develops fear and anticaption and there is no response from the vechoicle which therefore is an effective use of sound as it conventional to action and adventure.
Analysing sound from a wide range of films had added to my knowledge of sound as it had allowed me to identify the effectiveness of sound and how to use it to the best of its ability within our movie.Furthermore, by learning the diiferent sound techniques i have discovered which style of sound to include to improve the audiecne pleasure from my film , for example , when the scene has a emotionally scene i will include music to match the scene , which will therefore add to the effectiveness of the scene.

Mise-en-scene BLADE ( Updated )

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene a french term for ''placing on stage'' it includes five elements , lighting and colour , body language / facial expressions , positioning ,iconongrapghy and location. The use of these elements each en chance the audience view of the character and there feelings or the element helps them understand the scene more efficiently.

Lighting and colour , includes how bright or dark we view the scene , the main lighting styles used are high key lighting and low key lighting ; low key reduces the lighting ratio in the same , low key on the other hand is used to get a illumination effect and highlights the back or outline of the object or person.Colour notifies the audience about the mood of the scene , each colour has a connotation , black represents negativityl and inopposite white represents purity.

Another element body language , is effective when used in films as it allows the characters to express thier emotions , and therefore makes the audiecne understand the scene.Facail emotion is similar to body language however it only describes the emotion that is shown via the use of the face , the use od facail emotion shows the characters true feelings and therefore allows the audiecne to understand the characters.

The postioning of the characters is important in the scene as it can show the socail hierachy in the scene between the characters such as which characters are superior and which charracters and weaker and inferior, this helps to understand the scene.

All the props seen in the scene are known as iconography , this can include something as simple as a phone up to something more noticeable like a car or helicopter these are effective because they can make the scene more reealistic and therefore make us as an audiecne belive in what we are seeing and therefore get invovled int he film we are seeing , therefore the use of iconograpgy enchances the effectiveness of the scene on the audiecne.

Location in the scene is known as the setting , this can range from something exoctic as a desert or something in a city which is known as an urban enviorment , location is important because it can dictate the genre and eoxctic is more assoicated with adventure and genres such as romance and thrillers are more conventional linked with urban settings.

The USe of Mise-en-scene in Blade

The location of blade is urban , a underground nightclub sitatued in a city , this is effective because the audiecne can assiocate themsevles with it. There are many people dancing to music then all of a sudden the fire water disposers come on and spray out blood the people turn to vampires and we get a thrill because we didnt know they were vampires , fear is created as they is a human in the middle and the vampires turn against him.

Lighting in the extract is low key , this is used to create a mysteroius feel and show that the place there in isnt meant to be lit up so people can see , this lighting is also effective as it contasts the colours that the main character ''blade'' is wearing to the other characters are wearing and shows how he is more skilled and superoir than the others.

The props we see in the scene create a sense of excitement as the weapons that are used by the character blade aren't ones we are assiocated with , he has a specailised gun , its a shotgun that shoots out a sliver bullet which can istanly explode his targets which are the vampires , Blade also equips himself with a sliver boomerang with anciet desgin which he uses to instantly excute the vampires by chopping off there limbs, the use of hese weapons represent the character as skilled and expiernced at this type of combat. Therefore by the use of them we know a bit more about the character therefore the use of the iconography is effective.

Blade is always postioned in the centre of the camera with a close up shot this shows how he is superior to the other characters in the extract and shows his power , his use of postioning represents this to the audiecne as thier focus is mainly on him as the scene opens.

Blades coustime is a long leather black outfit , the colour of this represents negativity , however throughout the seem via the use of his actions we see that he is a protangnist therefore we can infer his is a vilgante. The other characters have a more varied coustume however this adds to the effect that the characters are trying to blend in as civilations and therefore use coustume to add to thier role as vampires.

Anaysling the use of mise-en-scene within films has helped boast myknowledge of how films use it to gain the effectiveness of thier films. We anaysled blade by judging the effectivess of the micro-elemets which was effective as it allowed to further our films audeicne pleasure.

What is a thriller ? Miss G ( Updated )

 What is a thriller ?

The term thriller describes the genre of a film or televison series that uses the themes of kidnap, rape and mystery as its main concepts , the sub genres that are invovled in thriller's are phychological, crime , action and horror . The term thriller , comes from thrills which is condsidered to be fearful excitement created in movies by the idea of scaring thier audience.Voilence is a major theme in thrillers and it contributes in the murders that are always featured in the films.

The sound usally assoicated in thriller films are digectic , non-digectic , on-screen , off-screen , parrell and contrapuntal. The use of these sounds can enchance the effectivess of the film and boast the impact it has on the viewer. The use of digectic sound enables the scene to be more realistic , for example, sounds such as a doorbell or phone call can allow the audiece to assoicate them seveles with the characters sitatuion and craete a relationship. Parell sound reflects the image such as a fight scene , we would expeact to hear heavy breathing or sound effects such as sword clashes as well as gun shots depending on the context of the film.

The use of cinematography within a thriller usally invovles , Camera shots such as close ,long shot ,point of view and etablishing shot , they all enchance the pleasure of the audeince for example a close up allows the audiecne to see the characters facail emotion wheras a long shot alklows the audiecne to see where the character is and the postioning of the character which can add to the effect of the characters profit with the rules of inferioty and superioty. Apoint of view on the other hand allows you to witness the view from the characters eyes which is effective as it gets you more invovled with the story and can allow you to see the narrative from the characters point of view , such as a character wielding a knife , we see his point of view and it adds to our fear.

The location usally assiocated in the genre thriller are excotic , they usally take place in a out of the way niebourhood or unknwon location as the scenes could get unrealistic if they were in a urban locatiom due to the nature of the scenes.

Iconograpgy is used in films to enchance the scene via presenting it more realistic , for example icongraphy includes all the props that are seen in the seen from chairs to mobile phones , however the most common props used in thriller are usally weapons such as kinives or weapons that are excotic such as hammers as they present a more gory feeling and can cause the emotion of fear.

an example of cinematograpgy within films is shown in the clip , the identity uses a range of close ups which represent the characters emotions as the close up allows use to see the character on a mucher closer scale in which we can see his eyes , which may determine how the chracter is feeling. Another generic use of cinematography within a thriller would be a long shot, in whcih would show the stance, postion and coustume of the character , which would also us to see his role , for example, the long shot would show his coustume , and if the coustume was black it would connote the character as bad , furthermore , the postioning of character shown in the long shot could represent the character in different forms , it could show his authority , whether the character is superior or inferior to the other characters or it could demonstrate his socail class.
The sound technique used within the extract is digectic , the sound is coming from the weather as thier is klighting , thunder and storms this sound is effective as it creates fear and excitement due to the sound bieng an use of pathific fallacy as the weather outside can be assiocated with the emotions and feelings within the room in the scene and therefore allows the audiecne to develop thier feeling of fear Iconography is the extract invovles all the clipboards and medical equipment used by the characters this is effective as it allows us to eatblish the postion the characters are in , as we are shown that the characters in suits are evaulating the character using medicals equipments sitution.
