Mise-en-scene BLADE ( Updated )

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene a french term for ''placing on stage'' it includes five elements , lighting and colour , body language / facial expressions , positioning ,iconongrapghy and location. The use of these elements each en chance the audience view of the character and there feelings or the element helps them understand the scene more efficiently.

Lighting and colour , includes how bright or dark we view the scene , the main lighting styles used are high key lighting and low key lighting ; low key reduces the lighting ratio in the same , low key on the other hand is used to get a illumination effect and highlights the back or outline of the object or person.Colour notifies the audience about the mood of the scene , each colour has a connotation , black represents negativityl and inopposite white represents purity.

Another element body language , is effective when used in films as it allows the characters to express thier emotions , and therefore makes the audiecne understand the scene.Facail emotion is similar to body language however it only describes the emotion that is shown via the use of the face , the use od facail emotion shows the characters true feelings and therefore allows the audiecne to understand the characters.

The postioning of the characters is important in the scene as it can show the socail hierachy in the scene between the characters such as which characters are superior and which charracters and weaker and inferior, this helps to understand the scene.

All the props seen in the scene are known as iconography , this can include something as simple as a phone up to something more noticeable like a car or helicopter these are effective because they can make the scene more reealistic and therefore make us as an audiecne belive in what we are seeing and therefore get invovled int he film we are seeing , therefore the use of iconograpgy enchances the effectiveness of the scene on the audiecne.

Location in the scene is known as the setting , this can range from something exoctic as a desert or something in a city which is known as an urban enviorment , location is important because it can dictate the genre and eoxctic is more assoicated with adventure and genres such as romance and thrillers are more conventional linked with urban settings.

The USe of Mise-en-scene in Blade

The location of blade is urban , a underground nightclub sitatued in a city , this is effective because the audiecne can assiocate themsevles with it. There are many people dancing to music then all of a sudden the fire water disposers come on and spray out blood the people turn to vampires and we get a thrill because we didnt know they were vampires , fear is created as they is a human in the middle and the vampires turn against him.

Lighting in the extract is low key , this is used to create a mysteroius feel and show that the place there in isnt meant to be lit up so people can see , this lighting is also effective as it contasts the colours that the main character ''blade'' is wearing to the other characters are wearing and shows how he is more skilled and superoir than the others.

The props we see in the scene create a sense of excitement as the weapons that are used by the character blade aren't ones we are assiocated with , he has a specailised gun , its a shotgun that shoots out a sliver bullet which can istanly explode his targets which are the vampires , Blade also equips himself with a sliver boomerang with anciet desgin which he uses to instantly excute the vampires by chopping off there limbs, the use of hese weapons represent the character as skilled and expiernced at this type of combat. Therefore by the use of them we know a bit more about the character therefore the use of the iconography is effective.

Blade is always postioned in the centre of the camera with a close up shot this shows how he is superior to the other characters in the extract and shows his power , his use of postioning represents this to the audiecne as thier focus is mainly on him as the scene opens.

Blades coustime is a long leather black outfit , the colour of this represents negativity , however throughout the seem via the use of his actions we see that he is a protangnist therefore we can infer his is a vilgante. The other characters have a more varied coustume however this adds to the effect that the characters are trying to blend in as civilations and therefore use coustume to add to thier role as vampires.

Anaysling the use of mise-en-scene within films has helped boast myknowledge of how films use it to gain the effectiveness of thier films. We anaysled blade by judging the effectivess of the micro-elemets which was effective as it allowed to further our films audeicne pleasure.

  1. You have explained and defined the micro element well and your analysis of the scene shows a good understanding of the representation of the character too. Now you need to discuss the codes and conventions of a thriller film in more deatil and include a summary to show your understanding of how you will use your analysis within your thriller film.
