Censorship. ( Updated )

Censorship Age certifcates are supplied by the British board of film classification (BBFC) the purpose of the certificates are to show a guideline of what age the film is appropiate for and if they are not allowed to watch the film unless they fufill the age requirement , or are with thier parents or guardian.

U  : This symbol represents universial , which means the film is appropiate for all , this is mainlu used in childrens films as there is no unsuitable content such as violence , an example of a universail labelled film is lion king .

PG : This symbol represents Parental guidance , this means it can be suitable for children however parental guidance is reccomend as some of the scenes may effect the viewer. An example a PG film is the incrediables , this is a pg and it contains fight scenes without showing gore.

12A : this suggest this film is unsuitable for children , however 12a means that you are legally allowed to view this film if you are accompanied by an adult over the age of 18 , an example of a 12a is spiderman

12: the rating of 12 describes 12 years of age or over only , these films conventional contain a sense of violence or drug abuse but not as a main theme, an example of a 12 is james camerons ' avatar which features scenes of violence although not on a large scale.

15 : 15 reprsents only 15 or over , these films contain use of drugs , acholol , biolence and som escenes of sexual nature an example of a 15 film is the hangover which bases it narrative around the theme of acholol.

18   !8 means that anyone 18 or over can watch this film. 18 rated films contain a excessive amount of sexaul scenes , drugs and violence , an example of this is Pul Fiction

18r - this is mainly used in porngarphic scenes and are completely unsuitable for anyone under this age.

From judging other thriller films in terms of censorship , i have came to a judgement that my thriller film should rated under the cenorship of 15 this is due to the facts that there is no direct views of blood or anything that viewrs mat find upsetting , furthermore it only has refercnes to violence and scenes of sexual acts without displaying therefore i think this rating would be apprioate for it.

Editing - Done -

Editing is used in a scene to add to the emotion created within the scene , it can control the pace , tension and feeling by speeding up or slowing down a scene. There are many editing styles such as ; reaction shot , slow editing , fast editing and others , they all are based on the types of camera shots and enhcnace the effect and emotion created in the scene.

Slow pace editing : This describes when the number of edits are minimum and don't directly take place after each other , this can be used to create suspense or a feeling of calm depending on the nature of the scene.

Fast pace editing : This is when edits are seen straight after each other , this speeds up the scene and can add to the high pace atmosphere and the affect of the adrenaline in the scene, therefore making the audience scared and anticipate where the scene is going to end up.

Straight cut : This is when the current cut goes straight into the other , this can create an effect of suprise.

Fade to black : this is a edit which ussally closes the scene , the current shot slowy fades into a black colour and you can't see nothing , this edit is used to reflect the ending of the scene. However it can also be used in the middle of the scene , to create a fear factor as it cut go into another edit at any time and therefiore create a shocking suprise.

Wipe cut : When one edit slides into another from a horizantal view , this can be effective as it can change into another shot at a effective speed without changing the mood of the scene.

Dissolve : this type of edit describes when the scene slowly disintragets into another scene , this is effective as it doesn't change the mood of the scene , and can go straight into another characters perspective. This is also effective as it is a quick translation.

Jump cut : a jump cut is when the shot jumps straight into another angle or scene. This is used to enchance the emoton of the scene and is mostly used within a fight scene , where you can see both of the characters trying to defeat one another , this becomes effective because you can see the fight between different angles.

Montage : this describes a collection of edits within a small period of time within an scene , this is mainly used to reflect a memory from a character.

A shot reverse shot : this includes three shots which start with the main orginal shot then goes to another then back to the orginal shot , this is mainly used within a tense talking scene where the characters are listening to eachother , this is effective as you can witness the characters reactions to each and this creates a realistic scene , and you see who is talking at the right time.

180 Rule : this describes the rule where you can only see the scene from a point behind the line , this is because it will change the poinsting of the characters within the scene.

Editing within the use of the film 'physo' follows these rules , the scene is in a shower where the vitcim is powerless , the build up up to the scene contains 15 edits , wheres as the attack happens we can identify 32 edits , this is effective as it adds to the fear factor and creates a tense scene , in which we witness a horrific attack.

Reaction shot : is used in physco starting with the curtain being with drwan , the next shot goes to a close up of the woman screaming , this is a reaction shot because we see the womans reaction to the pervuois shot , this is effective because this moment changes the mood of the scene as from here on the editing becomes much faster and the mood because more aggressive and intense.

Attainment from researching editing -

From analysing and explaining the features of editing i discovered where and how to include the editing styles into my film. I also discovered which editings styles create certain effects and learnt which ones i want to include for example , i will include a shot reverse shot , when there is a dialogue scene to show the audiecne the chracaters reaction to the others characters speech . By learning the editing effects i also gained expeierecne on how to add to the audiecnes pleasure via the use of the editing styles and therefore have had a further influence on my films potentional sucess.Furthermore , by anaysling other films editing , we were able to delevop points in our film where we adjusted the pace of our scene to reflect the emotions in the scene for example if the character was nervous the camera may shake or translate faster , which therefore would also the audiecne to gain a further understanding of the characters emotions.

Narrative Theory. ( Updated )

Narrative theory

A narrative theory is a idea that describes how your narrative is used to enchance the effectiveness of the film. There are different ideas of narratives , Vladmir Propo believed charracters are more fundamental than narrative and that the characters roles shaped the narrative whereas tzevton todorov' was a firm beliver that narrative theory was shaped via the uise of disquiellberum and equillberum which invovled which tempo the scene started at , he also believes that at one point theres id disruption in a film which leads on the the main section of it. Aritsole believed in the dramatic effect of a film , such things as themes , elements and emotions were more fundamental than a presise narrative , and beleived the themes structured the genre of the film.

Our Narrative :
Our narrative mainly links in with the ideas of Todorov , as our opening scene uses the effect of an disequillberrum we our opening scene at a high tempo , we introduce our character with a image that makes him produce a angry emotion , furthermore , to add to the link of todorov , we also have a diserupition that plays a effect on our main character and therefore shapes the direction and narrative of our film.

An example of how our narrative follows todorov's ideas is our opening scene , which introduces the character unnaturally as we see him having flashbacks from a numerous amount of items , this scene was an effective use of the todorov theory as it allowed the audience to identify that the thriller would be based around the uneasiness of this character.

Our themes :
Our film is going consist of themes that will demonstrate its a thriller with the sub genre of romance , we will use themes such as , murder , obession , love , hate , murder to illustrate this. The theme of murder is demonstrated by the main characters murder of another character , the theme of obsession is represented via the use of the main characters love and obession for the female character.

We have demonstrated the idea of themes by using elements such as iconography as we represent a necklace being handed from a male character to a female which connotes love , and therefore this use of iconography reflects the theme of love within our thriller.

Analysis of narrative theory
By studying narrative theories i have highlighted the differecnes btween the propov theory and todorov , which has benefited my film as i now know which theory i am going to strive for , furthermore , studying theories has allowed me to understand how to reflect the themes and messages of the film by using the micro elements which will hopefully add to the effectiveness of the film and the audiences viewing pleasure.

Narrative - Miss ( Updated )

Conventional ideas For a thriller Film :

We researched conventional ideas and elements of thriller films :
- Sounds ; Digectic , eerie sounds whether they be on-screen or soundtrack, non-digectic
- Editing ; Montage , slow pace
-Cinematography ; Close ups , long shots , establishing shot
-Mise-en-scene ;
- Lighting styles ; Low key lighting , high key lighting and natural light
- Iconography ; Weapons such as guns depending on the sub genre , cars , any props that enchance
the scene or are visible in the scene
-Location ; Setting can be urban or excotic more commonly Excotic
- Coustume ; Often colous presenting the quonnations such as black which represents negativity
as well as white which reflects purtity

Our Ideas for our thriller narrative :

Tres idea for a location was the excotic setting of woods and had the storyline of a person who stalked and followed people to rape them , this was a conventional and effective idea as it reflected the genre of thriller because it had excitement and fear as a main theme. Furthermore , his ideas of scenes such as a close up of a bystander being dragged away were effective as they created a sense of fear , and this linked back to the genre.
However , the thought of a rape scene in woods ,was un-orningal therefore we decided to take elements from this idea rather than copy it.

Jamies Idea on the other hand was about a child that grew up bieng bullied , this idea was set in a urban location of a city , the story goes on with the child growing up with an idea of revenge via the use of murdering them , this followed the conventuions of a thriller by the use of death as a theme.
However we thought was within this idea we couldn't show our genre as effective as another idea , therefore we just took the theme of murder and revenge from it.

My personal idea was based in a excotic location of a labortory where a drug tester gets given a new drug , and there are side effects which send the character in to a murdering physocpath , this follows the idea's of a thriller as it envovles a death and murder sitaution.
However the disadvantage of this idea is that it edges towards a sci fi genre and therefore doesn't follow our plan as a thriller.

We anaysled the effectiveness of each idea and focused on putting them into one idea which followed the codes and conventions of a thriller. We took themes from each idea such as death , obession and murder ; we also tooks ideas from each of the characters being described and developed them into our story.

Our Idea as a group :

Our group idea invovles the sub-genre of romance as it starts with a romantic scene where a heart broken man is expressing his emotion of anger with a close up of a picture of a couple , the theme of this scene comes from tre's idea of obession. As our film goes on the character starts to develop abnormal emotions which create a fear for the audicene , he slowly goes crazy and begans to consider murder, we developed this idea from jamies idea because it follows the pattern as a character slowly develops a burst of outrage and anger , and expresses it via the use of violence.
In terms of a storyline , our first scene starts with an image of a couple , a slow soundtrack is added to reflect the emotion the picture slowly fades into a scene where the photo that was shown is dropped on the floor where the glass is smashed , the scene then black outs , this is an effective scene because it introduces a theme of romance and violnece without giving away the storyline and therefore the audiecne are already engaged within 5 seconds of filming.

We also have another scene in which the main charracter , the pyscopathic male character witness's his ex-girlfriend with another man from a distance , we reflect this with a crane shot which fades into a extended point of view shot. With this scene we learn of the characters profile and his role in the film.

We anaysled other thriller film narratives and highlighted how they dictact the film and add to the sucess oif the film , from doing this we developed the key apsects of how to create a suceefull and effective narrative , therefore researching and anaysled other films narratives were helpful. The films we anaysled were scream and blade , which are conventional thrillers.

Cinematography. ( Updated )

Cinematography includes the use of camera effects for the cinematic effect or viewing pleasure of the audiecne. There are many types of camera shots that can include low shot , high shot , close up , long range and etablishing shot , they all can enchance or effect the effectivesness of the upcoming scene as well as our view of the characters.

The shot of the Close up is effective because it shows the characters facail emotion at a closer view and therefore we are able to highlight the key emotion of the feelings of the character as well as the mood of the scene , Furthermore the shot close up allows the audiecne to get closer to the audiecne which can allow them to further thier understanding of the character.

Etablishing shots open the scene , they are considered to look like long shots from a high level , these shots are effective as they can etablish the opening mood of the scene and show the postioning of the characters , this type of shot can also allow the character to know if the scene starts within a elleruibuim effective or disequilliberum.

Long shots show the characters fully body from footwear to hair this allows use to see the characters coustume and fully body language , long shots are usally used when characters are in dialogue , which shows the relationship between the characetrs and the postioning of them.

Extreme long shots are similar to long shots , however they are from a further distacne and therefore are zoomed out , and have less detail than long shots although they can provide the audiecne with the scenary.

Extreme close up is similar to close up however it is a close up on a more close scale for example you would only see a face wheras a close up would show the whole face.

Shot angles  : Where the camera is postioned within a shot , there are two types :

High angle is where the camera is higher than the character and therefore looking down on them which can represent the character as weak and/or vunerable.

Low angle is where the camera appears to be looking up at the characters or character , which is looking up at them , this shows the character and bieng strong and having authority.

Shot movements
 - Panning is where the camera is moving around the scene , which allows to see the round from varouis amount of angles as it is moving around the location.
 - Tilt is where the camera is moved up and down or is at a angle.
 - Crane is where the camera is above the location , this can also be classed as a birds eye view as it shows      the whole scenary from a high postion.
 - Zoom is where the camera goes further in without moving for example , a close up to a extreme close up.
 - Point of view is where the camera acts as a characters eye as the audiecne see what the character is seeing.

From anaysling the way thriller films use cinematography i have furthered my knowledge and understanding of how a shot can represent a character and how a shot can change the emotion and mood of a scene, furthermore , the anaylisis has prepared me for planning the cinematography of my thriller as i know now what shots i am going to include in order to create an effective viewing pleasure.

How is 'Scream' Conventional ? ( Updated )

Scream is a thriller set in a exotic location , a suburban styled house located in the middle of woods with only one road in sight. The opening scene starts with the main female character , played by drew Barrymore , getting set for a night in watching a horror movie. The phone rings and it appears they person on the other end has dialed the wrong number however , as the scene goes on we learn that the caller has set up a trap that is going to lead to her boyfriends capture and death as well as her own death.

The cinematography used in the opening scene represents the genre as it represents the emotion from the characters for example , there is use of a close up which shows the facial emotion , it is portraying fear as the character realises her fate could be death , this is conventional of a thriller as fear is shown along side a thrill of not knowing whether the character will survive or not. Another usage of cinematography within the opening scene is a long shot , where the antagonist or the murderer is chasing the female character with a knife , at this present moment we as an audiecne have faith that the character will survive however as the chase goes on we see that the killer catches up with his vitcim , a scuffle breaks out with the vitcim defending herself however , the murderers strength shows and he gets the upper hand , he then launches at her with his weapon and cuts a gash through her throat . At this moment two characters turn up to the house , which appear to be the vitcims parents , the vitcim See's this and tries to make one last move to save them however it is too late , she collapses and the parents enter the house unknowing of there fate. This is conevntional of a thriller as the cinematography used within the opening shots allows use to etatblish it uses the idea of disrquilbberum , and therefore begins within an high temp, which is a key element of thriller genric films.

The use of sound in the extract starts with a off-screen sound of screaming followed by the movies title at this moment with notified that the film will feature fear , as the scene continues there is use of digectic sound with the phone ringing , this makes the scene more realistic and leads us on to our narrative. The character is cooking popcorn which s digectic as well , becomes a pattern in the scene , as at the start it was cooking slow and there was only a slight popping niose to represent how the scene and character emotion was relaxed however as the scene progressed the popcorn had more of as tempo which portrayed how the scene was progressing as well as the characters emotions which were fear. The soundtrack at the start of the film also represents the conventional thriller sound as it starts with a slow low beat drumming noise and builds up as the film enters it opening scene.

The shot reverse shot when the female character was watching her boyfriend being held captive was a effective use of editing , it represented the convention of thriller as it created a sense of a fear based thrill as both characters are trying to escape from this situation and are scared , this follows by the girlfriend not being able to save her boyfriend and therefore the boyfriend is brutally murdered. The use of costume allows us as an audiecne the establish the character roles within the film , the female character is wearing a white jumper which represents her innocence and purity , however , on the other hand , the antagonist or the murderer , is wearing a black cape which represents death and negatively , featured with a white mask which we assiocate with the theme of Halloween or fear.

Lighting in scream is conventional as there is a low key lighting effect which enhance the shadowing effect , such as where her back is against the wall the light is low and there is a nervous feeling that the light creates. Another lighting technique used in the extract is natural lighting which is using outside lighting in a outside location for example , when the scene continues outside where the murderer is chasing the vitcim , this is effective as the scene becomes more realistic.Furthermore the use of low key lighting creates a negative mood within the scene and creates a gloomy atmosphere , this allows the audiecne to anticapate that something negative is going to occur.

Iconography involves all the props that are featured in the clip , in the case of scream we see weapons such as knives , which add to the violent effect , we also see household domestic items such as chairs , appliance and furniture ,  this adds to the effect of a average location.

Scream is a conventional thriller film , this is shown in the opening scene as it portrays a list of conventional elements , the use of the elements portray this , the use of sound , lighting, costume and cinematography are key in the conventional aspects of the film.Anaysling this clip from scream has helped prepare me for producing my own thriller film by learning how to create effect using the conventional elements for example i know what elements such as lighting , sound and cinematography to include to produce a conventiuonal and effective thriller.
