Cinematography. ( Updated )

Cinematography includes the use of camera effects for the cinematic effect or viewing pleasure of the audiecne. There are many types of camera shots that can include low shot , high shot , close up , long range and etablishing shot , they all can enchance or effect the effectivesness of the upcoming scene as well as our view of the characters.

The shot of the Close up is effective because it shows the characters facail emotion at a closer view and therefore we are able to highlight the key emotion of the feelings of the character as well as the mood of the scene , Furthermore the shot close up allows the audiecne to get closer to the audiecne which can allow them to further thier understanding of the character.

Etablishing shots open the scene , they are considered to look like long shots from a high level , these shots are effective as they can etablish the opening mood of the scene and show the postioning of the characters , this type of shot can also allow the character to know if the scene starts within a elleruibuim effective or disequilliberum.

Long shots show the characters fully body from footwear to hair this allows use to see the characters coustume and fully body language , long shots are usally used when characters are in dialogue , which shows the relationship between the characetrs and the postioning of them.

Extreme long shots are similar to long shots , however they are from a further distacne and therefore are zoomed out , and have less detail than long shots although they can provide the audiecne with the scenary.

Extreme close up is similar to close up however it is a close up on a more close scale for example you would only see a face wheras a close up would show the whole face.

Shot angles  : Where the camera is postioned within a shot , there are two types :

High angle is where the camera is higher than the character and therefore looking down on them which can represent the character as weak and/or vunerable.

Low angle is where the camera appears to be looking up at the characters or character , which is looking up at them , this shows the character and bieng strong and having authority.

Shot movements
 - Panning is where the camera is moving around the scene , which allows to see the round from varouis amount of angles as it is moving around the location.
 - Tilt is where the camera is moved up and down or is at a angle.
 - Crane is where the camera is above the location , this can also be classed as a birds eye view as it shows      the whole scenary from a high postion.
 - Zoom is where the camera goes further in without moving for example , a close up to a extreme close up.
 - Point of view is where the camera acts as a characters eye as the audiecne see what the character is seeing.

From anaysling the way thriller films use cinematography i have furthered my knowledge and understanding of how a shot can represent a character and how a shot can change the emotion and mood of a scene, furthermore , the anaylisis has prepared me for planning the cinematography of my thriller as i know now what shots i am going to include in order to create an effective viewing pleasure.

  1. Harry, cinematography and lighting are two completely different things. Cinematography is the shot size, angle or movement from the camera. Define what this is in detail, and discuss how effective use of cinematography can create meaning and responses from the audience.

You have started to discuss a close up and an establishing shot, but you still need to discuss the examples we learned in class, provide definitions and examples.

You need to also provide still examples from thrillers, and discuss why they have been used and the response or meaning they create from the audience by using the PEER formula.

You should end the post with some discussion on how the analysis of cinematography has helped you develop some of your own ideas for a thriller.

  2. Well done Harry, some good work here. You provide some good definitions and examples of shots to display your understanding.

To improve, state clearly that cinematography is the shot size, angle or movements from the camera. You have ended the post with some discussion on how the analysis of cinematography has helped you develop some of your own ideas for a thriller, but be specific to what these are.

  3. Good post on cinematography. You clearly demonstrate your understanding of shot sizes, angles and movements.

To improve, in your introduction state why cinematography is an essential micro-element that impacts and creates a desired response from the audience.
