Character representation (updated)

Character Representation is the idea of how the character is portrayed via the use of clothing , background , attitude and appearance ; Character representation can be used before we are officially introduced to the character , there clothing could dictate there personality as a character and their role in the film , for example , antagonists are usually assiocated with dark colours such as black to represent negativity. Whereas , on the other hand , protagonists usually wear colours such as white , which symbolise a positive emotion as well as purity. Character Representation is important to a films as they allow the audiecne to create relationships with the characters and therefore develop feelings for them , and further understanding of the character's role in the film.

It is important for us to develop characters that are conventional to a thriller , the characters we have created are the following :

  • Our characters: Troy is an 19 year old male who is of  st Lucian descent , his purpose within the film is to provide the violecne as he is portrayed as physoctic , due to his broken heart and his thirst for revenge. This character will appear to the audiecne as they can expeirecne tough emotional times during break ups.
  • Our other main character is julia , who is the ex-girlfriend of Troy , she is also 19 years old and is portrayed as a promiscuous teen who likes to play with boys, however what the audeicne don't know is that she likes attention due to her previous childhood which contained the expiercne of her mother dying , then witnessing  her father become a depressive acholic and therefore she received no attention. This character will appeal to our audiecne as some of them may have had expeircne with ex's.
  • Our other character in the film is a 22 year old called brad , who is portrayed as sophisticated and wealthy due to his practises as a physicist, he has a important role in the film as he becomes the new boyfriend of julia , which triggers the outrage from troy. his clothes are bright which shoiws he is a postive and ivting character as his wears sand colours trousers with a white t shirt and blue jacket.

It is important for your audiecne to develop an relationship with the characters as they will develop further understanding the scene or narrative ; we will develop a character/auiecne relationship by showing a former lover in our film who is obsessed with his ex, hopefully our audiecne would be able to relate to this and have expiercne of the characters emotions and therefore sympathis , furthermore we also have a boyfriend character who are male audeicne can see themselves in and therefore develop feelings for the character in a friendly sense , and sympathise for his situation.

Our characters are represented in different ways and have different appearances/personalities so that our film appeals to a wide range of audeicne , and also can approach diiferent levels or classes of society. Our character troy was a working class 19 year old who had minimal trouble with the police before he had turn't 'mad with love' , our audience could relate to him as he was an average person who just turn't crazy due to life changing events. Whereas other sections of our audiecne could relate to the character of julia's new boyfriend who is represented as middle class , due to the gifts he buys the girlfriend and the bright-coloured clothes he wears, which shows a contrast between him and troy , and troy is clothed in all black clothes to represent his negativity. Our female character , julia , is an effective character as she represents women who have had ups and downs with the element of love ; we show how her previous relationships have caught up with her and had an negative impact on her . Julia is wearing a Red stylish baseball jacket , the colour red has two quotical meanings - it could represent love , which is a reoccurring theme withing this thriller as well as violence/death as the red symbolises the blood.

Screen Shots / Images that were used within of our film -

This is a shot of our character julias boyfriend , we do not learn his name during the film. We think his clothes are effective as there is a balance between purity and youth , the purity and idea of positive living is shown within the white he is wearing , however , on the other hand , the colours such as blue illustrate his youth fullness and 'boyish' behaviour.

This is the character julia , her clothing is effective as the colour red symbolises the idea of death and love , however the use of the casual t shirt underneath her jacket also symbolises that she is still young and still has the idea of youth around her , this is effective as the audiecne can eststablish that she isn't fully grown and still has that immaturity about her, and therefore still has a lot to learn in life.

This is the character of troy , his coustume is made of of a black tracksuit , this reflects two apsects , firstly the use of the colour black connotes the idea of negativity and shows that he has a dark side , furthermore he is in a tracksuit which shows he has came out for a purpose and also doesnt want to stand out or be noticed which therefore shows the purpose of the plan he has.

Coustume is important within the idea of character representation as it can allow you to etablish the type of character they are as well as the role they have within the film or scene. We used coustume in order to reflect the purpose of the character or the personailty they have , which was effective as it allowed our audience to develop emotion for the character as they can infer what they are going to do or how they feel in the perticular scene due to the use of coustume.

  1. Harry, you have made a basic start in analysing and explaining the representations of your characters, however you still need to explain and give more reasons of the following:
    1) How will the audience build a relationhip with the characters
2)Your reasons for representing the characters in this way
    3) Include a still image

  2. Harry, this post on character representation shows that you have considered my feedback by making the necessary changes to your work. This post now demonstrates your understanding of why characters and representations are essential to a production. Also this also demonstrates your understanding of planning skills well too.
