Mise En Scene ( Updated )

Mise en scene  invovles all aspects that are witnessed in the scene or film , they can add to the effectiveness of the film as well as enhance the viewing pleasure ; mise-en-scene is a french term for the design of the scene , the elements invovled in the design of the scene are , setting and iconograpghy , coustumes , hair and make-up , poistioning , facail and body langauge , and lighting and colour.

Setting and iconography :

Our setting invovles an alleyway , park and a house , which are all realistic scenarys for which our audiecne may have expeirecned. Our alleyway is conventional towards a thriller setting as it is dark , narrow and quiet therefore if anything was to happen there the vitcim would be in trouble as it would be hard to escape. our Park setting is effective as it is an open space and holds alot of natural light ; a park is also effective as our audiecne can postion themsevles there and feel invovled within the scene. Our House/Living room is conventional as it is an urban setting and therefore the charatcters or audiecne wouldn't expect anthing to happen here , and therefore creates thrills via the excitement.

This is the location known as the 'alley' where the kidnapping takes place , this is considered to be a urban setting due to the sourrounding , this is an effective location for a thriller as it is dark and excluded and therefore it is conventional.

This is the location known as the 'street' where the characters julia and brad meet up , this is a pinical scene as the item 'the necklace' is exchanged. this location is effective as it is bright and suburban , this location isnt very conventional of a thriller however , this scene is meant to be contrasted to the next , and therefore is effective.

This is our location , 'the house' where the character troy is holding julia captive , it is conventional as it is an average house , in which the audiecne can relate to as they may have similar rooms in which creates a realistic feeling of the scene.

The Iconography used in our scenes mainly reflects the Horror / Fear aspect as we used weapons that are conventional considered to reflect fear such as knives and ropes , Other props that are used in our film are photographs , which are a fundamental tool in our play as they signifny a signifcent point in the film where the characters emotions change and therefore add to the viewing pleasure.

Coustumes , hair and make up :

Coustume is a key part of any film , the colours have be colorquiroal and therefore via the use of colour reflect a feeling , or a certain style of clothing may reflect the time period or location of the film. Our coustume for our main nmale character will have change to go along with his emotion , for example at the start of the film his clothing will be casual however , as the scenes go on we see a colour change to black and formal which will show how his mindst has became more negative. On the other hand , our female character will wear a colourful dress to reprsent she is happy as well as her sexualiaty.
The hair of our main male character will  deteraite as the film goes on , he will start well groom however his look will deteraite as the film goes on to reflect his mental and physical state.
Make up is used within the fil world to edit the characters opinon either to look better on camera or to add to the characters profile appearence or facail emotion , make up will be used within our film to show how are character is bieng effected by the issues , we will use a black shaded eye liner , which will show that our character is losing sleep and therefore has black bags on his eyes to symbolise this.

Postioning of characters :

Postioning of the characters change reflect his postion in the socail aspect of the film , for example if he appears higher within the camera's view this could implinant that his in superior in socail class or status , wheras , if the character is lower than the other could reflect his is inferoir and therefore considered to be lower within the socail class. Postioning in our film will represent our main character as superior as the film follows him , rather than our other characters. Our character is pointionsed at the front of the camera in most of the scenes as it shows he is what the camera is focused on and how we are portraying his life.
Postioning of objects in a scene describes were you will see the objects , this is important as the characters will know where the props are when needed and the cameraman will also know where to focus the camera on , our props are psotioned differently in each scene to portray the constant change in our char4acetrs emotion , the objects we use in our scene for the background are tables and chairs to show we are in a domestic enviroment.

Facail expressions and body language :

Facail expressions are effective within films as it shows a close up of the characters emotion and therefore could show an intake of what there really feeling. Body langauge is also effective in a film as it shows what the character is feeling via the use of the pyshical stance. Our facial expressions will mostly consist of anger , our character will reflect this via a clinch facail expression using his cheeks.Body language will mainly be used by our actor tre uses plays 'Troy' the main male character in the film , he will express emotion and anger by use of body language by shwoing how he is alwaysing tensing which also shows he is in distress.

Lighting and colour :

Lighting and colour can express what time of day or location the scene is , as well as describe which genre the film is . The most common lighting methods for thrillers are low key , high key and natural , Low key is effective as it creates shadows , which we will use in our play when the scene of the alleyway takes place to create a sense of fear. High key uses high instensity which varoius outbursts of light , this will be used in the house scene as thier as flames where the character is setting light to a photograph. Natural light is where hardly any lighting effects are added to enchance the light of the scene , our example of this is the park scene where we will let the natural light be the effect instead of introducing backgrounds lights , this is an effective method of lighting as it is relaistic as well as a simple way of shoting a scene.

Mise en scene is important within a film as it can improve the success of your film as there are key aspects that will improve your audiecnes viewing pleasure. We assesd each mirco element , and were therefore able to pinpoint when we were going to use them in orer to create effect.

  1. Harry, you have made a good start in planning the mise-en-scene of your film and your posts shows that you have clearly thought about the codes and conventions of a thriller film in some detail. Also it is clear to see that you have used your research to assist you with your planning too.

Now you need to include your original photos to show evidence and further planning of your mise-en-scene.

  2. Harry, this post on planning the mise-en-scene of your thriller production shows a good understanding of planning skills. This is evident through your post and through your description of the five different areas that you have considered. The screenshots that you have selected to include help to support the points that you have made too.
