Cinematography Planning
The Element of Cinematography is essentional in films due to the effect , emotions and meanings it can create within a film. It is important to think about the way cinmeatograpghy is used within a film as it can portray the storyline , create a relayionship with the audeicne or even enchance the audiences viewing pleasure.Cinematographgy is used in thrillers to produce the emotions of thrills , fear and excitement.
Some of our conevntional thriller cinematograpghy elements we included were camera angles , we used camera angles such as point of view shot to create a relationship with the audiecne and character as the shot allows the audiecne to see what the character see's and therefore feel as they are in their shoes and feel what they feel. The movement in our film is effective and conventional as it is free-flowing , for example , the camera isnt in a fixed postion during a scene and therefore , this creates a realistic effect and makes the scene more believeable.
The cinematograpghy I plan to use in my thriller conists of the following :
1.Close-up will be used when the character is about to produce a set of emotions for example , about to cry or scream , i think this camera shot is effective as it allows the audiecne to become more intreative with the scene by feeling closer to the action , this is a conventional camera shot as the use of the shot can change the characters thoughts or emotions for example if the character is crying , the audiecne can sympathise with the character and therefore have a relationship with them.
2.Panning will be used to rotate around a scene , this is effective as it allows the audiecne to visualise the scene from diiferent and varied points of views , furthermore i think this is an effective chioce as the scene is kept free flowing and kept with raw emotion. Panning will be used in my film in the scene where our character julia is held captive by the character troy , the camera will pann/rotate around the scene to show where the character is , the use of panning is effective and conventional as it can develop a sense of dissulion and confusion.
3.Point of view shot is effective as it allows the audiecne to have an insight from the characters view as well as interact with the scene. Our point of view shot is used where our main character troy has held our other female character , the camera is postioned where our character would be to show what our character is feeling and what postion they are in , this is effective as it allows our audience to be invovled in the scene and create a relationship with the character.
4.etablishing shot will be used when we enter a new scene , i have chosen to use this as it is an effective method to introduce the audiecne to a new scene or location , an example of where we will be using this shot is where our main character is following our female character into a new area this is conventional as it will confuse the audiecne into making assumpotions about what is going to happen.
5.Extreme close up is similar to close up as it is postioned towards the characters top half , however extreme close up is usally used to show the characters face or facail expressions. Extreme close up will be used in the captive scene where our female character julia is bieng force fed by our male character troy , the camera will be zoomed in on the mouth to show the food going in and also it will show the characters emotion. This shot is conventional as it can create fear due to the intensity and gore it can create , furthermore we allow to witness the characters emotions reacting to events that occur in the scene.
6.High angle will be used when our characters are in conversation with each other , this is an effective way of shooting our scene as it allows the audiecne to see the whole scene take place whilst focussing on the characters. The characters that will feature in this scene are Brad and julie , this is also a clinical part in our film as the conversation is a key point. High angles are conventional to a thriller because it can highlight the important scenes and signifcent ones and show when theres is a signifcent moment.
7.Low angle will be used in the kidnapping scene , this is the only example of the low angle shot as it is used the show the signifecene. The kidnapping scene is lowlight and therefore we thought it was also effective to use a low angle shot to also illustrate the characters feeling of useless in the scene , which reflects the inferoir emotion. Low angle is conventional to thriller as it can create the emotions of fear and excitement.
Editing Planning
Editing is important in films as it can allow the audience to become more invovled with the narrative as editing can create a free flowing fil via use of scene translation. I believe it is important to think about the editing, espeicsally in thriller films because the editing can enchance the fear created in the film and develop the emotions created , which in this istance are fear and excitement.
Some of the conventional uses of editing in thrillers are slow motion which slows the scene down is a unrealisrtic manor , slow paced editing which slows the translations of the film , fast paced editng which increases the speed of the tranmslations.
The editing I plan to use in my thriller consists of the following :
1.Slow paced editing will be used when our character troy is smelling his exgirlfriends scarf this is effective as it demonstrates troys emotions of love towards the character of julia , i have chosen to use this as it represents our character and gives us an intake of his personailty. Slow pace editing is conventional to thrillers as it can change the mood of a scene from love to hate.
2.Jump cut is a translation that creates a sense of suprise as it allows us to move from one scene from another , Jump cut is used in our scene to present our flashbacks , we jump from the sniffing of the scarf scene which translate into the memory of the scarf scene. Jump cut is conventional to thrillers as it can ecnhacne the feeling of excitement by creating a thrill effect.
3.Fast paced editing is used to keep a high pace scene when translating and further the tempo , we used this when the angtangist character is following the other two characters , this is effective as it creates tension and adds to the emotion gained by the audiecne from the film.
4.Straight Cut is a cut that is most effective when wanting to keep the pace of a scene while translation , it is used in our film to show where the character is going and where his location is , for example where we are filimg near the flats.
5.Wipe Cut - is a transition that swipes one scene into another , this will be used within our thriller film when the chatacer troy runs out of his hidden location which is our first scene. I have chosen to use this cut as it allows the scenes to gently translate without adapting the audiecnes focus . this cut is conventional to a thriller as it chagnes the scenes from location to location , or , character to character without chagning the mood of the scene or taking away tension , furthermore , it may create excitement for the audiecne as it can be used when the audiecne doesnt expeact it and therefore come as a suprise.
6.Reaction shot - is a shot in which the following shot reacts to the previous one , and therefore allows the scene to flow within a naturally and relaistic manor. This shot will be used within my thriller when our chracaters Julie and Brad meet up , brad hands julia the necklace , in which we cut to her to show how she reacts to the gesture , which also allows us to etsablish thier relationship. This is a shot conventional to thriller as it shows how the characters interact and allows the audiecne to dinstinguish how the scene will commense further on within the film.
7. Fade to black is a cut that dissovles the scene into darkness , this will be used within our thriller when our character julie wakes up from her kidnapping m this allows
Cinematography and editing styles are important within a film as they are the spine of the films as they create what the audience see and influence the pace of the film in terms of editing as editing can provide the scenes to speed up or slow down via the use of the transitions.
Harry, some really great examples here of the cinematography you plan to use, and why you have chosen to use them, well done. However, editing still needs to be completed.
